Education in the United States

There is some difference between the system of education in Great Britain and in the USA. American education is more practical and less “academic” or abstract than British.
Each American state provides money and controls the education. There is a great number of school districts in the USA and the character and quality of a school system depends on who pays for it how much.
Children enter primary or grammar school at 6. The school consists of 6 grades. Children graduate from it at 12. Pupils in primary school learn the same things as do the children in other countries. They learn to read, to write, to count and sing. They study geography, foreign languages and history too.
Junior high school follows primary one. It consists of 3 grades. The subjects here are more detailed. Children get more advanced knowledge and may choose different subjects that they like. The high school prepares young people to work after graduation or for more advanced study in a college or university.
An American college is an institution of higher learning which lasts 4 year period. Students get a Bachelor degree. At colleges students develop a research work. The students may gain a Master’s degree with a year or two of further study. Most American colleges train students go into business or industry.
