    Test I
    (Correspondence Department)
    1.Reading and Poem Analysis
Read the poem by Robert Frost and answer the questions below.
    Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire,
    Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
    Is also great
    And would suffice.
    a) With the help of which EM and SDs the complex idea of the poem is expressed?
    b) Explain the meaning of the line: “But if it had to perish twice.”
    c) Comment on the cases of alliteration in the verse.
    d) What do fire and ice symbolize?
    2. Reading and Text Analysis
Read the text and do the assignments that follow.
It fries our heads when we use it. It drives us mad when others use it. And yet, no matter how much criticism is heaped on the mobile phone, nearly half of us cannot live without it.
Most people would no more talk to their neighbours on the train or bus than stick pins in their eyes. But once the mobile is pressed to their ears, they are off. In some, it engenders oblivion to the outside world as they pour forth banalities and intimacies to all around. “I’ll be home at the usual time”, drones the man who has never been home at an unusual time in his life. “Hello poochywoochywoo”, utters another, as we bite our lips and hide behind our papers.
Most disconcerting are the health-conscious “hands-free” crowd who appear to be talking to themselves like lunatics while the phone sits in their pockets, sparing their brain and microwaving another part of their anatomy.
There are few refuges left. Only remote countryside, tunnels and aeroplanes offer any respite, but even these do not look secure for long. The London Underground is about to be wired for sound to ensure uninterrupted twittering beneath the capital.
These, of course, are the problems with everyone else using mobile phones. As with children, we scowl at other people’s but beam fondly at our own. Once we have grown to depend on our little brain-frazzlers, we wonder how we ever lived without them.
from an article by R. Hardman in “The Daily Telegraph”
    a) How does the author depict the process of speaking by phone? What EM or SDs does he use?
    b) What is the writher’s attitude to a mobile phone? Is he fond off his own? Does he strongly object to all mobiles?
    c) According to the author, what is the role of mobile phones in our lives? How is it revealed in the article?
    3. Summary writing
In between 100 and 150 words, and using your own words as far as possible, summarise the given article.
Communication – it’s much easier said than done
Trust is key in an open organization
