    HUMAN RESOURCES (HR) AND COMPUTERS: SHOULD HR MANAGERS CHIP AWAY AT HR INFORMATION?
    1. All organizations must manage the human resource function. Most organizations, even small ones, are using computers to find new and create ways to facilitate organizational effectiveness. It seems natural that these two realities should blend and produce computer programs that help manage the human resource function.
    2. In fact, organizations routinely use computers to keep track of payroll rosters, compensation, and distributions of the workforce. Seldom, however, do HR managers systematically use computers to conduct and track job evaluations or performance reviews, nor is the computer used much to track health and safety records or career path and profile information.
    All organizations must manage the human resource function.
    3. HR managers commonly use computers to monitor payroll compensation, employment history, and other record keeping information. Managers who use computers as a human resource tool state that they do so to save time and increase management efficiency, objectives that can be accomplished by computerized record keeping. Very few HR managers profess to use computers to enhance decision making or to improve human resource effectiveness.
    4. This restricted view of the computer's capability may be why computers are least used in such areas as career development job evaluation, and performance review it is these areas in which the human resources function can contribute to employee development and enhance organizational effectiveness.

    The word economics comes from two ancient Greek words that mean ""household management"". Modern economics, of course, is concerned with much more than the economic problems of households and families. But for most people, day-to-day economic decisions usually are directly or indirectly related to the household. Wise management of financial resources is of utmost importance to the well-being of any family or individual.
    A household is similar to a small business firm in that it is concerned with obtaining the greatest amount of output (satisfaction) from the use of its limited resources (income). To do this, its members must choose between short-time and long-time objectives and among alternative courses of action. Much like a business, the household must plan and control its expenditures to obtain the best economic results.
    Unlike most business managers, however, many household managers have little education or experience specifically designed to improve their efficiency as managers. They must learn through experience, and some are slow learners. That is one reason why some people with good incomes run out of funds long before payday. Generally, they have not planned expenditures in line with their incomes.
    This chapter discusses some of the major problems with which people must cope in spending their incomes, and suggests some useful methods for achieving one's consumption and security goals.
